Dear Friend:
I'm about to tell you a true story. If you believe me, you will be well rewarded. In fact, it could change your piano-playing life. If you don't believe me, I will make it worth your while to change your mind.
Let me explain:
When I was in the 8th grade, there were lots of kids who could play piano better than I. For example, there was this guy named Scott who had the same piano teacher I did, and at the annual recital he played 'Kitten On The Keys' -- a jazzy up tempo novelty song with lots of frills that really got the audience going. I played right after him, and my song was 'Minuet in G' -- hardly an exciting song, and much easier than 'Kitten On The Keys'. It was embarrassing, because he was my age, and had only taken piano lessons a year longer than I had.
Now fast forward 3 years. We are in our 3rd year of high school at Placer High in Auburn, California. I had gotten interested in jazz a couple years earlier and had sent off for a 'Chord Chart' in the mail. As I recall, it cost me two bucks. Working all by myself with that chord chart I had learned a dozen or so of the most-used chords. Then I went to a jazz concert at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento where I saw the great Erroll Garner play a solo concert. I had no idea that a piano could sound like that, and I perceived that what he was doing was breaking up chords in some complex ways I didn't understand at the time -- but wanted desperately to find out.

Dear Friend:

I had gotten interested in jazz a couple years earlier and had sent off for a "Chord Chart" in the mail.

So I immediately bought some of his records and started playing along with them, running my hands up and down the keyboard as I heard him get higher and lower, pretending that I was the one making those incredible sounds. I did that by the hour -- not only at home, but also in the practice rooms in the music building at Placer High.

One day as I was doing this, Scott happened to walk by

the practice room I was in and noticed what I was doing.

"What in the world do you think you're doing, Shinn?

That sounds terrible!"

He was right, of course. It did sound terrible, but that wasn't the point. The point was -- I was gradually learning which chords Garner was using, and how he was breaking them up and moving so deftly between them.

Now fast forward another 2 years. We are in our first year of college at Sierra Junior College, and I am playing in the college dance combo. Scott sees me playing and comes over to the bandstand and stares at my hands for a long time. Finally he shrugs and says "I can't believe it. I actually used to be better than you, Shinn. Now all I can do is play what's in front of me, and you can improvise all over the place."

I tell you this story not to brag, but to demonstrate that it is possible to learn to improvise -- even by yourself, with no one to help you but a chord chart and some recordings.

But YOU don't have to learn by yourself. You can take advantage of all that I have learned about improvising over the past umpteen years since that happened. Instead of sweating by yourself, trying to figure out "how they do that", you can stand on my shoulders and learn piano improvisation correctly right from the start.

Here's how the program works:

I'm going to take you on a 7-month journey into piano improvisation. Each month for seven solid months you'll receive a new book from me, along with a wonderful audio CD on which I play and explain and demonstrate everything in the book, so you can hear how it sounds as well as see what it looks like!

Piano Improvising -- The Exciting
7-Month Home Study Course!

The 1st month we will lay the foundation for improvisation, including the 12-bar blues. You'll improvise right along with me as we go through the blues sequence many, many times, until you get the "feel" of it. You will work out of a 28 page book that goes hand-in-hand with my wonderful audio CD so you will HEAR every note, every chord, every progression at the same time you SEE them in the book. That makes learning fast and secure.

The 2nd month we will learn how to create a "motif" -- also known as a theme, for our improvisations, then develop that motif. We will also cover "razzles" on various beats of the measure. (This will also help your rhythm -- an added bonus!) And of course I will be playing and explaining each razzle as we go along, so you really can't miss, since you're seeing it with your eyes while you're hearing me play it with your ears!

During the 3rd month we will learn how to play popular ballads, using an arpeggio pattern in our left hand. Of course, I'll play every single example shown in the book, so you can hear exactly how it should sound. You'll play a half-dozen beautiful ballads, and learn to improvise on each one.

The 4th month we will learn chord substitutions, how to apply triplets to improvisation, how to use inversions -- all the stuff that makes for exciting, lush arrangements! The use of good chord substitutions makes your playing not only professional, but individual as well. You put your own "signature" on each song.

The 5th month we will work with 7th chord improvising and various accent patterns. (And don't forget -- you get a new book to work out of EACH month, including this month!). 7th chords are so important in all kinds of music, because they are "pregnant" -- they want to "deliver" you to the next chord. You'll not only master them, but you'll also improvise on them!

During the 6th month we will drill on the arpeggiated bass using 6th chords, the altered 9th chord, and what to do when 3 or more chords are in the same measure. When you create a "flowing river of sound" with your left hand arpeggio, your playing sounds full and lush and exciting.

The 7th month we will learn and work through the blues scale (which notes to flat to create a "bluesy" sound) and mixed up motifs, and we'll put it all together so you can see how everything relates. You'll learn the importance of the flat 5th, the flat 3rd, and the flat 7th, and how they work together to create that "jazzy" sound!

So there you have it.

Seven months from now YOU WILL be improvising -- and understanding what you're doing! You'll be making up your own melodies (made out of 2 or more motifs you learned back in month #2). You'll be playing exciting chord progressions based on the blues scale (which you learned in month #7). You'll be creating moods. Playing the blues. Playing ballads. And many other improvisational styles.

And remember -- once you learn the principles of improvisation, you can improvise in any kind of music -- gospel, praise, pop, rock, C&W, R&B -- any style!

Sign up now, and get started on your seven month journey to improvising!

Cordially,

Duane

P.S. I know the tuition for this course is embarrassingly low for a course of this magnitude. The same material at a conservatory or university (IF you could find such a course) would cost many times this amount -- (if you have attended college recently, you know about this!) But this is first-class material using seven excellent books and audio CD's that illustrate and demonstrate each improvisation technique. So even though it's extremely low-cost, it is the highest quality course you could possibly take!

P.S. again: The course is so clear and easy to understand that you really don't need me to hold your hand as you go through it. But if you want me to, I will. See the order form below.

Dear Friend:

Dear Friend:

How would you like to master -- really master -- the art of playing the piano using a "chording" style?

When I was a kid, my Mom played the piano by reading the notes in a piece of music -- like most everyone does. It was fine, but not near as exciting as what my Dad did. He didn't read music like my Mom, but he played those wonderful, fun "chording things" that everybody loves. We sang along as he played, and it was great fun.

During those years I took piano lesson from a little old lady teacher named Mrs. Graham. Looking back, I feel sorry for her, because I was interested in everything EXCEPT piano playing. I even took my baseball glove with me to a lesson one day...

And I basically got nowhere. Oh -- I could play a few pieces: I remember "Swans On The Lake", and "Indian War Dance", and "Santa Lucia". Hardly the stuff that excites a young boy.

I wish you could have seen me play the piano when I was just learning. I was the nearest thing to “hopeless” that you could imagine. I was into baseball, not music – and my heroes were Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Ted Williams. (And by the way, I still have a picture of those 3 guys on my wall.) My dream was to hit baseballs like them, not to play the piano.

But an opportunity to play with a combo presented itself to me when I was a freshman in high school. Seems the piano player of the group had graduated the previous year, and nobody else played piano well enough to play in the school jazz combo. I didn’t know zilch about playing in a group, and I didn’t know chords. But I was excited to have the opportunity to play with older guys, and so I took the job.

The lead sax player told me I really should know chords in order to play in the group, so I searched through a music magazine until I found an ad for a chord chart. It cost two bucks, as I recall, so I sent off for it. When I received it in the mail I slipped it behind the keys on my parents old upright piano, and promptly learned to play my first chord – Dm7. I LOVED the sound of it, and was hooked for life on chords. The 2nd chord I learned was Cmaj7, then Em7, then Ebm7 – and before that first night was over I had learned to play “Frankie & Johnnie” – the tune in my right hand, and those fabulous 7th chords in my left hand!

Chords changed my life!

I loved it – LOVED IT – LOVED IT! And it even sounded good enough to impress some of my friends the next day. I suppose that simple chord chart that cost me two bucks has been worth several million over the course of my lifetime. And much more than that, has been worth quadrillions in pleasure and satisfaction and relaxation and……

So why should YOU care? What does that mean to you?

Because that high school freshman with the two-dollar chord chart went on to learn more about chords than most anyone in the known universe, and all his courses are LOADED with knowledge about chords and chord progressions and chord substitutions and chord extensions and chord modulations and chord improvisations and………

…..and he teaches you step by step,

chord by chord, style by style,

technique by technique….

how to use chords to make the

sounds YOU want to make,

to play the songs YOU want to play.

Even though I came in the back door as far as piano playing was concerned, I learned fast because of what I knew about chords, so college was a snap, and so was my post-graduate Masters Degree at Southern Oregon University. After high school I studied with several of the finest private teachers on the West Coast, including a year with THE finest teacher – his name was Dave – and his studio was on Cauhenga Blvd. in Hollywood. As I would come for my piano lesson, I would often pass a big name recording artist coming to their lesson – and anyone who was anyone in Hollywood in those days took lessons from Dave.

Dave taught me 2 fundamental principles about piano playing:

1. The piano is NOT played with the hands – it is played with the brain. The hands are just tools.

2. If you master chord relationships, you can master music.

I’ve got little fat hands with short fingers. Hardly the ideal hands for piano playing.

But you know what? Because of those two principles Dave taught me, I can play “above” my fat hands.

Above?

Yes.

Above.

Once a person “gets into the flow” of understanding chord relationships and then letting the brain knowledge flow into the hands, that person plays “above” his ability.

What You Discover Here Will Change Your Musical Life Forever.

Why?

Because in this 52-lesson course on 5 CD's, I literally take you by the hand, answer all your questions, and show you exactly how to do it.

"Chording Secrets of Exciting Piano Playing!"
The "chording" system has the advantage over traditional methods in two ways:

You understand the "why" of music right from the start. Instead of so much memorization and learning by rote, you learn HOW scales are formed, HOW chords are formed from scales, WHY minor chords sound different than major chords, and so on. You understand what your fingers a re doing, and why they are doing it.

You start playing songs that sound good right away. No need to practice Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee for months before playing something you enjoy. Start playing your favorite songs after the first few lessons -- because ALL SONGS are made out of CHORDS!

Well, I could go on and on about the course, but by now I think you see that if you ever want to play the piano using chords, this is the course you should take. It's a fabulous course, and if you will look on the order page, you will see that I'm offering up to 7 free bonuses when you order.

Here's what the 5 CD's that make up the audio portion of the course look like:

If you're not convinced yet, here are 8 more reasons you will want to take this course:

A fraction the cost of private lessons! If you could take 52 private lessons from me in person (I don't teach privately anymore since my heart attack) it would cost over five thousand dollars. And you probably would not have time to cover all the subjects in this 52-lesson course. Yet this course costs only a tiny fraction of what private lessons would cost, and it's your to review over and over again!

Get your head on straight! Learn how to categorize musical knowledge so you will understand music as you play. Understanding is the key to mastering any subject, including music. You'll learn to organize your knowledge of rhythm, harmony, keys, sharps, flats, melody, chords, and a great deal more.

Play styles galore! Teach your left hand to play many different styles. Learn how to play with an "orchestral" sound. Learn how to sound "country-western." Learn the secret of that modern, jazz-oriented sound. Learn a boogie bass. Learn how Shearing gets that "block-chord" sound. Learn alternating bass, arpeggios, walking bass, broken chords, and others.

Learn to improvise! Learn to create your own music as you go along. Learn about the "delay-catch-up technique." Learn how certain grace notes can give your playing a "flavor" of it's own. Learn about triplet fillers, non-chord leaders, imitations, moving bass lines, tremelo, and other improvisational techniques. Improvisation is not a magical ability possessed by only a few -- it can be learned!

Chords, chords, and more chords! Learn how to play chords with both your right and left hands. Learn how to use chords to improvise. Learn how to break up your chords. Learn how to "shake" your chords. Chords in the course are shown as you play them on the piano, so you can SEE which fingers to use -- which notes to play. You wil also learn how to play from chord symbols such as G7, Fm7, D9, and so on.

Fill up those empty spots! Learn how to add runs, breaks, fillers, etc. to your piano playing. Learn how to arrange a song in advance. Learn how to make up your own intros and endings for your songs. Most pianists just "play what is written," but you will be able to do that PLUS add all kinds of extra exciting material to a song. This ability makes you stand out among pianists.

A 52-Lesson Course! Take 52 weeks or 52 days or 52 years -- it's up to you how fast you progress. I just show you what to do -- but you have to make it happen! This course covers everything from chord formation to playing by ear to chord progressions to improvisation to various bass styles to sight-reading to chord symbols to polytonality to playing modern chord sounds, plus lots of practice songs. All 52 printed lessons come to you bound together, so you'll have everything in one place -- plus of course the 5 instructional CD's where I demonstrate and walk you carefully through each of the 52 lessons.

Bonus 1 - Bonus 2 -Bonus 3 - Bonus 4 - Bonus 5 - Bonus 6 - Bonus 7 - Bonus 8! In addition to the 52 lesson course, I am also including EIGHT BONUSES!

Bonus #1: A free "Headless Video DVD" -- Since the course itself is on audio CD's and printed lessons, I wanted you to be able to SEE and HEAR each technique demonstrated so you can catch the actual hand and finger motion. The camera zooms in on my hands -- not my face -- which is why I call it the "headless DVD."

Bonus #2: A free chart on "Popular Piano Playing Simplified" that focuses on playing popular music using chords.

Bonus #3: A free chart called the "Sacred Pianist's Kit". Shows how to transform a 4-part hymn or gospel song into a full arrangement using chords, octaves, runs, etc.

Bonus #4: A free "Visualized Chord Chart". Actual pictures of 96 chords as they are played on the keyboard.

Bonus #5: A "Chord Prediction Chart." How to figure out what chords come next in a song.

Bonus #6: A "Magic Keyboard Chart." A 7" by 22" chart that slips behind your piano keys to guide you to any note in either clef.

Bonus #7: "Music In a Nutshell." A summary of all the fundamentals of music. Great for reference!

Bonus #8: A book of "Practice Chording Songs" that lets you practice your chording skills without getting bogged down in reading music.

Piano Lessons For Adults Who Want To Really Understand Music

Piano Lessons for Adults Who Want to Really Understand Music

Did you know that music is based on natural "laws" -- like gravity -- and by learning to understand how those natural laws work we can actually understand what we are doing when we play -- we don't have to be at the mercy of what someone else has written on a piece of music.

How many of these facts do you know about music & piano playing? Test yourself and then check the answers at the bottom of the page:

Did you know that by learning just 3 chords you can play hundreds of songs?

Did you know that there are only 12 major keys you can play in, but you only really have to master one key to play most popular songs?

Did you know that it is possible to easily match any melody note (tune) to a chord, so you can harmonize any note?

Did you know that Beethoven's Fur Elise and the blues song "Summertime" uses the exact same chords for the theme of the song?

Did you know that it is quite possible to predict what chord comes next in a song with accuracy approaching 85%?

Did you know you can use the same chords to play boogie, blues, new age, gospel, pop, rock, jazz, country - anything except classical music? (And even some classics!)

Did you know that by coming in through the backdoor of piano playing -- chords -- you can start making wonderful and satisfying sounds on the piano in just a few days instead of a few years -- even if you don't know Middle C from Tweedle Dee?

Did you know there is a guy up in Oregon who will teach you all this stuff by mailing you CD's and DVD's along with whatever printed material is necessary?

And did you know that if you believe NONE of the above, you can still sign up for a free 39 week email newsletter on "Piano Chords And Chord Progressions!" so you can see for yourself that everything above is true?

Answers to piano playing music questions:

True. That's because there are just 3 primary chords in any key -- like family members: Mom, Dad, Child. Get to know those 3 and you've got it.

True. It's like languages. It's great to be able to speak several, but you can get by with just one. I'd love to speak other languages, but I can get by with just English.

True. Every note is part of several different chords. So it is easy to harmonize any song once you know the secret.

True. Yep. They both use the A minor chord and the E7 chord in their themes. (Click here and hear me prove it.)

True. I know that's hard to believe, but remember that music is based on math. Once you understand a thing called the "Circle of 4ths" it's a piece of cake. In fact, I can tell you right now that 85% of the time the G chord comes directly after the D7 chord. So next time you run into the D7 chord, you have an educated guess of 85% that the next chord will be some form of the G chord. (G, G7 etc.) If you're into amazing your friends, that'll do it!

True. Apply different rhythms to the same chords, and you have many styles of music! With the very same chords I can play boogie, jazz, rock, pop, gospel, new age, ragtime.
